Halloween Pity Party

Would someone please send me a few little darlings to make my own. I miss the fun of Halloween. This used to be a big deal at our house. Costumes were decided by the middle of September. It was such fun. Not so much anymore. Actually, it's bordering on absolute nothingness. Thank goodness I have my next door neighbors who still come running over to show me their costumes. They are 8 and 12 and we have such fun.
The college aged kids have big plans for the night. Dressing up and hitting the bars in their town sounds like just the way to spend Halloween...not!
My senior is also going to a party. I will be home with a big bowl of candy waiting for someone to ring the doorbell. We will probably have less than 5 kids and I will eat the candy and annoy my husband with all the "remember whens."
Friends, I need a little person, or two, or three. I'm dying here.

Back In The Groove

Kids in college, a senior looking for the right school and computer crashes have led to two months of no blogging. I am far, far behind but am determined to catch up.

DD is in the midst of her senior year of college. She has two internship options for the spring and is studying for the GRE. Grade school apps will be done over the next month. I cannot believe my baby girl is going to be a college grad. Now that's making me feel old! S1 is doing fantastic. He loves college and has only been home twice since he started. He has a precious girlfriend and is thoroughly immersed in the whole college lifestyle.

S2 is still having a hard time deciding where he wants to go for college. He stresses way too much over decisions. Hopefully, he won't give himself an ulcer before all is said and done.

Some of my rooms have been painted and I'm waiting for my drapes to be completed and hung. I'm searching for paintings and a few larger items for that "wow" factor. In the course of redoing shelves, cabinet and table tops I now have a HUGE amount of knickknacks, pictures, candles, fabric, etc that I'm trying to decide where to put. I know the kids will have more apartments and houses and I don't want to get rid of everything. It's too bad, really because I could provide a decorator with an endless supply of "fluff stuff" ha.

I'm back to searching for clothes again. Ugh! Hate it. Was out in search of bras recently and actually shed tears. I was put in a huge dressing room with mirrors on every wall. Lets just say I was blissfully unaware of what I actually looked like. Someone stole my body and replaced it with an old lady's. All I'm saying is if anyone heard wailing and bad language coming out of a Nordstroms changing room, I'm probably to blame. It was a bad day!

I am now recommitting myself to blogging in a timely manner. I hope I haven't lost all the readers that I love so much. Apparently, I'm also out of the loop when it comes to blog drama. I think I missed something big last week. Hope everything has calmed down. I would hate for some of my favorite bloggers to disappear. Thanks to those of you who haven't deleted me from google reader. I miss you all!

Back On Track

Goodness, look at the date. I can't believe it has taken me so long to post a new entry. Life has been crazy here in Texas. We moved S1 to college on August 20th. He hit the ground running and hasn't stopped. He absolutely is loving college life. He has the most amazing off campus dorm room. It is HUGE. He and his roommate have their own room and they each have a full size bed with tons of room. They have a living area that is big enough for a couch, entertainment center, drums, keyboards, guitars, some one's cello, table and chairs and more. Unbelievable. He eats almost all his meals in the cafeteria and we have had to add to his meal plan since he arrived. Whenever I talk to him he is so excited. I miss him like crazy but what a great beginning. I couldn't be happier for him.
My daughter is doing fantastic, as well. She has tried to meet up with her brother a few times during the day but he is SO BUSY, ha. I'm sure they will connect. She is looking at Grad Schools and ordered her Senior Ring. Whoop!
S2 has started his senior year and is beginning the college app process. He is not as gung ho as S1. He's torn as to what he wants to major in and he over thinks everything. He just stresses too much. I think that once he starts getting into the whole process it should get easier. He can't really pick a place where he wants to go. He does not like where the other two are and he wants to live in a city. Engineering, Architecture and Premed are what he's looking into and it's hard to find an exact fit for him. He will though but he will think it to death first.
Our fridge is still chugging along. Good thing because we have written A LOT of checks for college stuff. I thought that S1 would be easier since he didn't really have much he wanted before he left. He has more than made up for it since he moved. His room is looking pretty nice, ha.
I'm still working on the house redo. I have exactly what I want in my head but am trying to pull it off without spending the fortune that Ralph Lauren would like. I'm pushing myself away from anything small and going right for the things that make a big impact. I sure do want a cashmere throw though. Bliss! Not for $500+ though. I have a friend who just opened an account with RL and can get a fairly good deal on fabric. Am looking for chair ideas now. Painter has been on an extended trip but should be back around the 21st. I hope I'm first on his list.
It's unbearably hot here. I think that when Labor Day ends Fall should begin. It's hard feel fallish when the high today should be 96. Yuck! I think I will turn the air to 68 and cook a roast and apple pie. Hubs will love that!
Thanks to everyone who is still following me even though I've been such a blogging slacker. Hopefully, I will come up with something amazing to write about and I won't lose you gals in the process. Thanks to those of you who popped in to see if I was still alive. I really appreciate it. Makes me feel loved, ha ha.

It's Only Money

I just happened to glance at my posts as I was signing in to catch up on blogs and realized how long it's been since I gave an update on my redo. Oh, the joy of indecision. The hardwood floors are not going in. A couple of problems would make the installation way more expensive than I want to pay right now. Such is life.
A friend and I headed out a couple of weeks ago in pursuit of fabric and furniture. Oh, what we found. Ralph Lauren, need I say more. Since we built our house so many years ago, I have always envisioned a certain look. I have let myself be pulled away from it through the years but I always drool when I see this look. My sweetheart of a friend put me back on track for the look that I love. (Ralph Lauren, you're my idol) So our whirlwind shopping excursion which lasted about 7 hours gave me the place to start. Fabric to be ordered, furniture to be purchased, accessories to be bought and ones at home to be shipped away. Then reality hit.
Our fridge is going out. My husband has fixed it a couple of times in the past. (since repairmen charges $150 to tell us that they can't fix it although hubby always seems to) It's on the blink again. Just buy a new one, you say. Ours is a built in and retails for about $7000. Yep, $7000! Way to ruin my redecorating plans. The fridge is still chugging along but who knows how long it will last. Darn reality!!!
Back to my wonderful fabric....started thinking about what would happen when my DD's cat comes to visit. Claws and Ralph Lauren fabric don't mix. Hmmmm, what to do. OK, new plan. Ralph Lauren fabric for the windows, pillows and ottoman. Recover the chair we love in a durable fabric. Paint to update two other rooms. Accessories to tie it all in. (Hello, Forestwood Antiques!) New plan, less money in comparison, and I'm a happy girl. Now if that fridge will just last a couple of months so I can work my magic. Anyone in the Dallas area know of a great, affordable upholstery place? The man my family used for years was a bit of a drinker and I am not kidding when I say he has lost almost all of his fingers due to "accidents." Seriously! He was so good too.
Hope everyone is doing great. I know many of you are contemplating giving up the blog world for FB and twitter and all I can say is....PLEASE DON'T!!! Even if you only post every few weeks, I still love to read about what's going on with each of you. So, please don't totally leave!

Hardwood Flooring

I'm having a quote done today for hardwood in my family room. We have wood floors through out the downstairs but not in the family room. In addition, the guy had a cancellation and could do it early next week. Chairs, TV console and a new coffee table will make my dreams come true. Add drapes and I will be in complete bliss. (after I do a bit more tweaking, ha) Fingers crossed, girls. I might actually get my family room exactly the way I want it. My hubby has NO idea how I might show my gratitude!!!

Fun For The 4th

My life has hit a new low. My kids have all made "other" plans for the 4th. My older son decided to visit his sister at school so he left on Wednesday. Don't really want to know what they have planned! My younger son has made plans to attend a few parties around town. My closest friend and go-to person for holiday get togethers is out of town visiting family. My extended family who was coming over to celebrate has a nasty stomach bug going through the house.

Yep, I feel as if I have a big L on my forehead. NO PLANS FOR THE 4TH OF JULY.
Wow! I just don't even know what to say, ha.

Priorities

I can't believe it's been so long since I blogged. I'd like to say it is because I've been so busy but in actuality, it's because I'm just lazy.

Summer has definitely arrived here in the Dallas area. Good lord, we are already having predictions of 100+ temperatures this week. Hate it! The arguments over the indoor temperature have already started and it's not even officially "summer" yet. By July and August, our electricity bill runs over $1000 a month. Hubby it justified in wanting the air kept above 75 during the day and 72 at night. I think my internal temperature gauge is messed up because that is just tooo hot for me! He has been looking into ways to lower our bill. He's wanted to have radiant barriers something or another installed in our attics. Only problem is the main attic, two closets and probably a bedroom will have to be emptied for installation. Don't know about you guys but that's a heck of a lot of work and mess. I've not jumped on that bandwagon. He also has looked into having motorized shades installed on our back porch to help with the afternoon sun and the glare from our pool. $15000 for 5 shades. Hah! They come with a 5 year warranty which means in 6 years they will need to be replaced because of fading, tears and who knows what else. Not even remotely on board with that one. For the record, he's not either.

It's all about priorities, girls. Around the time that he was looking into all the energy efficient cooling options available today was the same time that I sent pictures of my family room to Joni at Cote De Texas begging for some ideas on my house. I am in the mood to spruce things up. Of course I am. We will have 2 in college and 1 finishing private high school this year. Please, isn't that usually when the redecorating bug hits, when you absolutely cannot afford it. Isn't that also when you find THE perfect piece of furniture and THE perfect fabric for drapes. Not to mention THE perfect front door and THE perfect dining room table. I haven't even looked at carpet or found THE perfect coffee table yet. Does anyone else think that tapping the IRA is absolutely OK since we plan to die in the house so we would just be using retirement money a bit early? Works for me! Also, which is more important, decor or energy effeciency? I think everyone knows where my vote goes.

I tried to do my part to come up with the money. I cleaned out my "book closet" and made a trip to Half Price Books. 125 books netted me $44. Yep, that's a good down payment on the $15000 I need to get started. I even thought about getting a part time job. I'd probably have to work for two years to come up with the necessary money and I highly doubt my hubby will front the money with the promise to pay it back with my "paycheck" ha!

So girls, I'm sitting here feeling sorry for myself and knowing that a "home makeover" would make my life complete. And just to let everyone know how petty I can be, I am actually a tad resentful that S1 has gotten money and cool gifts for graduation and also gets a new computer, new tires, new bed linens and goodness knows what else as he gets ready to leave for college. Just keeping it real!
